What's this about?

More information about the Studienkolleg system.

Why do you need a Studienkolleg? Why do our graduates not have the right to enter universities in Germany after graduating from school?

The fact is that the duration of schooling in Vietnam, Equadore, Chili, Mexico, Iran... is 11 grades, while in Germany it is 12-13 grades. In order to compensate for this difference, Studienkolleg exists. The Studienkollegs provide the missing hours of preparation in the subjects of the 11-year secondary school. In fact, the Studienkolleg system, introduced in 2005 as an experiment, proved the correctness of its appearance (previously you had to study for a year at a university in your own country in order to gain the right to apply to universities in Germany) also by the fact that a young person arriving in a foreign country has a year for adaptation to a new country and time for better mastery of the German language. Once again, you can enter universities in Germany without a Studienkolleg, but to do this you need to complete one course at a university in your home country. In this case, you will have the right to apply immediately for a bachelor’s degree, in the first year. If you have already received higher education in your homeland, then you will also be able to enter Germany without studying at the Studienkolleg - you will be able to apply for a master's degree in your specialty or for a bachelor's degree, your diploma in Germany, if you apply to a German university for a bachelor's degree , the university will simply consider you eligible to apply for a bachelor's degree (as after the first year). But there are subtleties)) When applying to the Studienkolleg you need a level of knowledge of German B2, and when applying to a German university after a year at a university in your home country - C1-C2 (TestDaF 4444). What is very difficult to achieve is that you need to study at a university and master the language to the level of a native speaker.

Studying at the Studienkolleg is based on the requirements of German universities and takes into account the student's previous knowledge.

Study goals at the Studienkolleg in Germany:

1. Students will learn German terminology used in their chosen field of study.

2. Students learn to use the technical language in their chosen specialty.

3. Students learn to develop individual learning strategies.

4. Students acquire the necessary cultural skills.

An important feature of studying at Studienkollegs.

There are two types of Studienkollegs. After some, you can study at any educational institution in Germany. After the second - only at Hochschule. That is, only at universities of applied sciences. At Hochschule you can also complete a bachelor's degree (Hochschule provides a full-fledged higher education), but such universities usually do not offer master's and doctoral programs, and you will have the right to enroll in a master's degree after studying at Hochschule. Therefore, if you do not need M-Kurs, then we believe that the option of enrolling in the Studienkoleg with further admission to the Hochschule may be an excellent prospect for starting studies in Germany. Another important point. How are Hochschules in Germany different from universities? At Hochschule, training is more practice-oriented. Representatives of companies come to Hochschule and hire employees there. At the Hochschule you will have compulsory work as part of your studies. And your Hochschule will find this job for you in a specialized company. It's easy to get a scholarship at the Hochschule. Most universities in Germany do not offer scholarships. In general... If you don’t want to become a theorist, if you don’t really need a master’s degree, and you just want to quickly get a higher education in Germany and start working (for big money), then you should, of course, choose to study at Hochschule. And accordingly, enter the Studienkolleg for further admission to Hochschule.

Курс SW: for social programmes and social sciences

Why were the various modules invented at the Studienkollegs?

And is it possible to enroll in a specialty that does not correspond to your diploma of graduation from the Studienkolleg in Germany?

In Germany, an international student is expected to be a responsible person who plans his life. And to make studying at a university easier, and the results of studies higher, it would be better for the student to prepare in advance for studying in the chosen specialty. As a result, after graduating from the Studienkolleg in your field of study, you will be able to apply for admission to universities only in the field from which you graduated. That is, if you decide to become a doctor in Germany and study at a medical school, then you are required to graduate from the Studienkolleg course "M". Of course, there are interdisciplinary courses and professions such as bio-informatics, business informatics and which can be classified as different courses. Indeed, in different German universities the same specialty may belong to different Studienkolleg courses. Such specialties usually belong to two letters, for example, bio-informatics to M and T. Of course, this needs to be carefully checked each time (for each university separately). Only a specialist in the German education system can help an applicant understand this. Moreover, this specialist must have career guidance skills. And we have such specialists. After all, if you make a mistake, your documents will simply not be considered

By the way, the admission system for studying at the Studienkolleg has changed more than once. The last changes to the rules for admitting foreigners were in 2015 and 2020. It makes no sense to read the “Internet” with the goal of understanding everything and quickly becoming specialists in international education. Every year, the laws and conditions for admission to Germany change a little... Some articles and comments from former applicants or current students are true, but for their own period of time. Only an educational agency that works every day to enroll students in various fields of study in educational institutions in Germany can give you an accurate answer to your questions at a given time.

If you ask our opinion. Here’s a simple fact: 6-10 years ago, students mostly entered master’s and bachelor’s programs after 1-2 years at a local university. Now 90% enter Germany immediately after 11th grade. Through the Studienkolleg system. Why? There is a rule - a German university first enrolls those foreigners who have applied to them after graduating from Studienkolleg in Germany. Then only the admissions committee of a German university will consider all other applications from different countries.

Studienkolleg system in Germany

LET'S REPEAT AGAIN.

Education in Germany for those foreigners who study in their country at school for 11 years (and not 12-13, as in Germany itself) begins with the Studienkolleg. It is there that such applicants complete the missing hours of studying in order to equal the level of studying with those who graduated from a German high school. Studienkollegs can be paid or free. The study programs of the Studienkollegs are divided into areas. Upon graduation from the Studienkolleg, you need to take “final” exams in the subjects required for your field of study. After passing the exams, you will receive an FSP certificate, which will show your average score based on all grades for the subjects you studied. Your course letter will also be stamped on your FSP certificate. For example, having received an FSP certificate for studying at the Studienkolleg in a technical direction (T-kurs), you will not be able to enroll in the humanities or any other universities, only in technical ones.

ASSESSMENT SYSTEM IN STUDIENKOLLEG. FSP POINTS.

FSP is an abbreviation of Feststellungsprüfung. The final exam taken at the end of the Studienkolleg. The main thing for a student is the average FSP score!!! It depends on where he can go...

The grade levels are calculated as follows:

1.0 to 1.3 = very good (1) - required for medicine, bioinformatics, etc.

1,4 bis 2,5 = gut (2)

2,6 bis 3,5 = befriedigend (3)

3,6 bis 4,0 = ausreichend (4)

4,1 bis 5,0 = mangelhaft (5)

5,1 bis 6,0 = ungenügend (6)

Materials that YOU can use to prepare for exams at the Studienkolleg.

Once again about the German way of thinking

1. Before the Germans were able to adapt the school certificates of the international community As a country, the system of education in middle schools is published in German.

2. During the various years of the system adaptation, it was introduced in 2005 by killing two birds with one stone.

* Adapted student  hours across different countries according to a variety of options for various educational programs with German school programs.

* reduced the number of foreign students who were expelled after the first year at German universities (among foreigners there were up to 40%)

* to obtain the right to study at the Studienkollegs you need to pass entrance tests, this also has a positive effect on academic performance in universities, because bad students are eliminated at the very beginning of their journey to higher education in Germany.

In this way, it became possible to calmly adapt to life and study in Germany for a whole year and study at higher education much more successfully in the future. Isn't that a great idea? So the Germans found the Studienkolleg system productive and, after several stages of renovation, they settled on what we have now. You can enter the SK immediately after school, but not after university (or even 1st year of university), Studienkollegs are divided into “Courses” - humanitarian, technical, medical, etc. Do you want to study to become a doctor? Go to the Studienkolleg for the M-Course. Do you want to be a teacher? Your option is G-Course. And then - according to the same scheme.

STUDIENKOLLEGS IN GERMANY

What are the types of Studienkolleg?

Studienkollegs in Germany can be for free, at state universities, and paid at private educational institutions. The average cost of training is 2500-4000 euros per semester (six months). To enter the state Studienkolleg, you must pass entrance exams and pass a certificate competition; to enter the private Studienkolleg, you only need a certificate of knowledge of German - B1 or B2, depending on the course of the Studienkolleg and the educational institution. It is interesting that German universities treat diplomas from private and public Studienkollegs absolutely equally, which has been empirically proven many times.

Do universities provide a guarantee of admission to those who graduate from their Studienkolleg? 50 to 50. Halle, Hamburg, Nordhausen, Leipzig can give bonuses upon admission to them after their Studienkollegs. Others do not provide any benefits. But these conditions change every year. For example, Halle now gives - 0.5 to the average score they received at the Studienkolleg (that is, you passed the FSP at 1.9, and they give you 0.5 points and you have, as it were, 1.4 upon admission to the University of Halle), but at the same time 3 years ago such bonuses there were no yet...

We have a separate article dedicated to paid studiencolleagues. We repeat - the FSP certificate of private studienkollegs is accepted by all universities in Germany. Of course, private Studienkollegs also have their own ratings, and the admissions committees of German universities certainly know which private Studienkollegs prepare students well, and which produce those whom universities in Germany will expel after the first semester. You can only get into some private Studienkollegs with a recommendation from a state Studienkolleg. Such private studienkollegs even guarantee admission to public universities in Germany after receiving the FSP.

WHAT THEY STUDY AT THE STUDIENKOLLEG. HOURS AND SUBJECTS.

Real Life Facts.

30% of students at Stüdienkolleges take additional classes with tutors in Germany. they study German language and subjects in parallel with their classes at Stüdienkolleges. Those who don't. Sometimes drop out of the Stüdienkolleg. If you feel that it is difficult to study - do not despair, but immediately find good (do not cheap) tutors. That's fine. Then you will get into the working process and master the peculiarities of German education. Everything will be fine.

STUDENT VISA TO GERMANY TO STUDY AT THE STUDIENKOLLEG

ROUTE TO GERMANY

What should I do after enrolling in the Stüdienkolleg?

0. You must register with the Stüdienkolleg and submit all required original documents to the dean's office.

1. You must take out German insurance.

2. You have to find a place to live so that you can be registered there.

3. You must register with the police and get a residence permit.

4. You must unblock your block account.

5. After registration with the police, you must open a bank account in a German bank.

WHAT ABOUT THE TUITION FEES AT GERMAN SCHUDIENKOLLEGS?

In the State Studienkolleges tuition is free, however, each institution has an internal semester fee of 100-600 Euros.

It is important to note that the states of Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria have introduced increased semester fees for students (except for universities of public administration) in the amount of 1500 Euros per semester. BUT. This only applies to bachelor's and master's degree programs. Stüdienkolleges (e.g. Stüdienkolleges at Heidelberg Universität and others) are also free for foreigners. In Germany there is also a range of fully fee-paying colleges, they are obligatory state-accredited and their diplomas are accepted by all universities.

DO I NEED A STUDIENKOLLEG TO START STUDYING AT A PRIVATE GERMAN UNIVERSITY?

There are about 70 private higher education institutions in Germany that charge fees of 10000 euros per year or more. In order to enroll in such institutions, you still have to be eligible to enroll in a German university, which means you have to have either a year of higher education in your home country or a completed Stüdienkolleg.

I PLAN TO STUDY IN GERMANY IN ENGLISH. DO I NEED A GERMAN LANGUAGE SCHUDIENKOLLEG?

Yes, of course. Studienkolleges give you the legal right to enroll in German universities. The language of instruction in a bachelor's degree program does not affect your right to study in Germany.

IS IT POSSIBLE TO FIND A STUDIENKOLLEG IN GERMANY IN ENGLISH?

Yes, there are two of them. After these colleges you will not be able to apply to all universities in Germany, but only to those with which your college has made an agreement. As a rule, these colleges give you a choice of 3-8 options of partner state universities. You should know the majors to which you can apply (usually W-Kurs and economics/management or T-Kurs and a limited selection of technical majors).

How long do I have to wait for a German study visa?
The standard is about 4 weeks. But according to the instructions, the embassy can take up to 8 weeks to process a visa. Out of 10 visa applications, 3 will be processed exactly 8 weeks. 3 will be processed in 5-7 weeks. 4 will be processed in 3-4 weeks. What should I do if my visa has not been issued yet, but the date of the entrance exam is coming and I have to go to Germany? Are there often such cases? Yes often. Out of 10 visa applications, 2 will be issued later than the exam date. There are several options. It is better to talk about them at the consultation.
What is the visa status for study Studienkolleg?
Germany is open to applicants to the Studienkollegs and embassies accept applications for a German student visa even without enrolling in the Studienkollegs, just an invitation to an exam.
What happens to the visa if I am not accepted?
The embassy will call you and check whether you have successfully passed the entrance exams, if not. Your visa will be canceled.

DO I NEED A UNI-ASSIST FOR ADMISSION TO THE GERMAN STÜDIENKOLLEG?

Most Studienkollegs of course work with Uni-Assist to enroll foreigners in Studienkollegs. However, some schools require original paper documents to apply for study at a college. Such Studienkollegs are about 20%. Naturally, such Studienkollegs have the lowest competition, because few people can understand such a complex and non-standard application and even more so to deliver the documents to Germany in time. There are some Studiencollegs that accept documents in electronic form - but within their own systems, without using the Uni-Assist system (e.g. Studienkolleg Munich and others).

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO APPLY TO STUDIENKOLLEGS THROUGH UNI-ASSIST?

The first application for admission through Uni-Assist costs 75 euros. The next application costs 30Eur. That is - to submit 5 applications via Uni-Assist will cost 195 euros (75Eur + 4x30Eur).

The application fee for direct applications to the Stüdienkolleges - without using Uni-Assist - is usually 60 euros.
